Request Phase

Request Phase

Description and Approach

This is the start of the project lifecycle. The Request shouldn't really be thought of as a "Phase" in the true sense. It is really just a defining point to formally capture the "Thinks... wouldn't it be nice to ...".

A Request could be for any of the following (ie, it will need to be classified initially):

  1. New Application System (or project)

  2. Major change to a legacy Application System

  3. Minor change to a legacy Application System

The only work performed during the Request phase is to complete the Request Form, receive it formally, record it in the Request Register, prioritise it and then decide if the next project lifecycle phase should be Phase Zero or Maintenance and Support. No project work is performed during the Request phase.

Requests could come from anywhere within the Enterprise, including from the IT Department itself. Requests could come in via any of the following IT Department Moment of Truth Activities:

  1. IT Help Desk

  2. IT Manager

  3. IT Information Centre

  4. Change Request Form

  5. Defect Report Form

  6. Additional Personal Computer

  7. Additional printer

  8. Branch relocation

  9. Application System access security change

  10. IT Account Manager

They are all treated the same.

Purpose and Objectives

To formally request some work be performed by the IT Department.

Why

  1. Formalises project initiation.

  2. Stops trivial requests taking up IT Department's valuable time.

  3. Everyone knows how to initiate a new project, project scope change or legacy Application System change.

Inputs

Standard (unmodified) Request Phase Work Plan.

Outcomes and Deliverables

The desired outcomes for this project lifecycle phase are:

  1. Someone is identified as having requested the work (the Engager).

  2. The request is initially classified.

  3. The request is prioritised.
