Project Configuration Management

You can create a Project Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) either by creating each WBS item individually or by copying them from a template.  This Project WBS also doubles as your project's work products (deliverables) register.  You can then happily monitor and control the delivery of these work products and never go anywhere near configuration management.  At the Project WBS level you are able to create RASCI charts as well as monitor and control progress and completion.

However, if you want the benefits of configuration management and access to the large suite of PM^Complete™ configuration management functionality, then you can also utilise configuration management.  Configuration management gives you the ability to monitor and control multiple, unlimited versions of a work product as well as check-out/check-in control.

Each work product is first identified if it is to be a configuration item (or not).  In other words, not all work products need to have configuration management applied.

Only those work products that have been identified as requiring configuration management will then have configuration item records created for them.

   o Contracts
   o Courses
   o Documents
   o Entities
   o Forms
   o Functions
   o Generic Equipment Units
   o Patterns

   o Requirements
   o Specific Equipment Units
   o System Interfaces and Data Conversions
   o Test Plans

There are maintenance functions for all of the above that allow you to record details about them.

For each Project Configuration Item, PM^Complete™ allows you to perform:
   o Version Management
   o Relationship Management
   o Estimate Management
   o Project Life Cycle Management
   o Development Environment Pipeline Management
   o Procurement Pipeline Management
   o Release/Bill of Materials Management
   o Check-Out/Check-In Management

By recording configuration items, you can monitor for each project configuration item:
   o Multiple version numbers
   o Multiple releases, iterations, sprints, versions, builds, revisions, timeboxes, prototypes and code drops
   o The relationships between project configuration items
   o Where in the development pipeline it is up to
   o Where in the procurement pipeline it is up to
   o Detailed estimate, baseline and actual cost and time requirements
   o Detailed responsibility assignments
